Neuralink Corp., the brain-computer interface enterprise established by Elon Musk, has achieved the successful implantation of its device in a third human patient. Musk revealed this week that the company intends to conduct an additional 20 to 30 procedures in 2025.

“We’ve got now three humans with Neuralinks implanted and they’re all working well,” Musk said during an event in Las Vegas, streamed on X.

Neuralink is part of an expanding cohort of startups focused on the development of brain implants aimed at addressing medical conditions like paralysis and ALS. These procedures are experimental in nature and typically necessitate the surgical opening of the skull to insert electrodes into the brain tissue. One year ago, Neuralink announced that it had successfully implanted its device in its first patient, Noland Arbaugh.

The organization presently has two studies in the United States for its devices that are registered with the Food and Drug Administration. The Prime Study, which is intended for approximately five patients, enables individuals with paralysis to operate external devices, including computers and smartphones, using their thoughts. The second study, known as Convoy, is aimed at three patients and facilitates the control of devices such as assistive robotic arms.

Neuralink uses a surgical robot to implant a brain-computer interface (BCI) in the movement intention area of the brain. The BCI interprets brain signals to control external devices, featuring “ultra-fine” threads for efficient signal transmission.

Competing with firms like Synchron, Precision Neuroscience, Paradromics, and Blackrock Neurotech, Neuralink aims to improve communication and mobility for those with neurological conditions.

In November 2024, Neuralink received approval to begin a feasibility study of its brain implant with an experimental robotic arm as part of the PRIME Study, focusing on safety for quadriplegic patients. The goal is to allow these individuals to control devices using only their thoughts.

As Neuralink advances its clinical trials and BCI applications, it is making significant strides in revolutionizing the neurotechnology field.
