Funds misappropriated through hacking of cryptocurrency platforms increased by 21% compared to the previous year, reaching $2.2 billion in 2024, according to a report released by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis on Thursday.
This hacking total has now surpassed $1 billion for the fourth consecutive year, with the number of incidents rising to 303 from 282 in 2023. In the previous year, hackers had taken $1.8 billion.
The uptick in cryptocurrency thefts coincides with a significant surge in bitcoin, which has risen 140% this year, exceeding the $100,000 threshold and attracting institutional interest, along with support from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
